How Much Did Urban Ministries Receive of the $335.17 Billion Given to Charity?
“At an estimated $335.17 billion, total charitable giving from U.S. individuals, corporations, foundations and bequests in 2013 approached the peak seen before the worst of the Great Recession, adjusted for inflation, according to research released today by Giving USA Foundation and its research partner, the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.”
While most Christians may not be aware of the magnitude of grant funding given each year to fund nonprofits, they are aware that a considerable amount of funds are donated. However, what many may not realize is that many foundations, businesses, and other funding institutions will not fund religious organizations for religious purposes such as urban ministry. According to the Giving USA Foundation report, giving to religion was flat. “Giving to religion was flat (-0.2 percent) between 2012 and 2013, with an estimated $105.53 billion in contributions. Inflation-adjusted giving to the religion sub-sector declined 1.6 percent.”
Typically, they will not fund church planting, outreach to the poor, Christian community development and leadership development. Consequently, it is up to Christians to fund the work of God in the city. The National Urban Ministry Association is focused on providing financial and other resources to under resourced urban ministries and churches. You can help by joining our “Give to Urban Ministries $1 Campaign.”
